Brownsville (Liberty City) Real Estate

Brownsville (also known as Liberty City) is located in the north central corner of Miami-Dade County. Median household income: $16,902 and the population is 14,393. It is an unincorporated neighborhood located in the core urban area of Miami.

Renamed, Liberty City is named for the Liberty Housing Project built in the late 1930's for Miami's low-income residents, the second of its kind in the south at the time. Liberty City is home to several Historical African American Cultural Shops, the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center. Known for its contributions to black politics championed by former black congressperson Carrie P. Meek the area now has its own college. The college is called the EEC, short for the Entrepreneurial Educational Center. The Center has attracted top-notch faculty--including attorneys, scientists, and scholars--whose mission is to level the playing field in this inner city locale.

Special credit goes to EEC Librarian Theodore D. Karantsalis who has developed what is considered to be the finest collection of black literature in the area. Liberty City is also home to the Miami Workers center; a strategic planning and organizing center for low-income communities and low-wage workers in Miami-Dade County. Initiated in March 1999, the Center's mission is to work to end poverty and oppression.

Liberty City is located close to the Vizcaya Museum, Miami City Ballet, New World Symphony, Florida Grand Opera, Miami Art Museum, Gusman Center for the Performing Arts and Coconut Grove Playhouse. Many transportation options within easy reach. Metro-Mover and Metro-Rail give access to downtown and all of Miami, and the connecting Tri-Rail can travels north to Ft. Lauderdale and Palm Beach.
